Yucca Mountain 1. A proposed storage facility in Nevada for the United States' entire supply of nuclear waste (approximately 77,000 metric tons). The Bush Administration promotes the transfer of such waste from the many nuclear energy plants across the nation to Yucca Mountain as a means to better secure the nuclear material from terrorists, who could use it to build a crude radioactive weapon.
Geological review of the site has been unable to show that the area water supply would be safe from contamination, which could have horrific effects on human beings and the environment. The Bush Administration's Department of Energy has cleverly ignored such reviews when considering the suitability of the site in order to sow concern among terrorists who might endeavor to infiltrate Yucca Mountain. For some irrational reason, possibly attributable to Bush Hatred, many Nevada residents oppose this plan. |
